Anti- Choking, Heimlich, and LifeVac- Every Second Counts

Help me give my students LifeVac anti Choking Devices to use along with the Heimlich Maneuver in instances of Choking!

My Project

As a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher, my advanced cooking students cook 3 to 4 times a week. Also, each and everyone of our students and staff eat breakfast, lunch and snacks each day at school. The odds of someone experiencing a choking emergency are rather high given our population. As a 20 year educator, I had to administer the Heimlich Maneuver once to one of my special need students (special need students are at a greater risk of choking). To say it was the scariest day of my career where time stood still is an understatement. Luckily, after 4 aggressive rounds of using the Heimlich Maneuver, the Lasagna Roll Up was dislodged from my students throat! (Needless to say, we have never made Lasagna Roll Ups since!).

Even though we have nurses in the building, when most instances of choking occur, it is imperative that action is taken immediately since every second counts; help us provide our High School Students and Staff with Heimlich and CPR posters as well as 2 LifeVac Anti Choking Devices.

Training everyone on the steps to take are crucial to help save a life. Having the LifeVac devices and posters next to our Automated external defibrillators (AEDs), could mean the difference between life and death. (I already had the lasagna roll up removed from my student before the nurse was even able to make it to my area of the building.)

Having experienced a true choking emergency, it is imperative that we prepare our students and staff for a future choking situation. Hopefully we will never have use for the LifeVac device, but if we do, at least we can be prepared.
