This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a group of very active fifth graders. They love to dance, play video games, listen to music, and engage in math and reading games online. I love that my students have grown to respect each other and feel compassion as a class. I encourage my students to be life-long learners and avid readers.
My classroom is a dual language immersion class with a 50/50 model in English and Spanish.
My classroom will have to include both an English and a Spanish library. My students will be reading in both languages equally, but we will need more books in Spanish since it’s the hardest to get our hands-on.
My Project
Learners will be able to follow along with read alouds and shared readings of Wonder by R. J. Palacio. This novel study provides a focus on different perspectives and how studying perspectives helps us to understand the world. We will focus on enjoying the literature, but also respond to the novel in quick writes and create graphic organizers to track character development and plot development. Students will also compare and contrast the movie to the novel and create a speech based on how perspectives affect how we view the world. The books the students receive will be part of a seven week novel study.
