Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever felt like you just weren't good enough? Everyday children come to school in fear of being bullied.

My students live in an impoverished area of Los Angeles.

All of them receive free lunch and 99% of them are minorities. Close by they see gang activity, from tagging to brawls. Many of us wonder how did these kids get here. Why do they turn to such violence? The answer is sometimes deeply rooted in their childhood. Many of these "gangsters" as children were bullied. They have felt left out and not good enough. So where do they turn? Gangs. Here they feel powerful and that they belong.

My Project

My hope is that I can stop my students from someday becoming gang members. By teaching them how to deal with bullying and developing their self-esteem I hope that they won't turn to gang membership to feel complete. Currently at my school site there is no bullying prevention program but I want to change that. With the text Bullying in Schools, I hope to not only teach my students about bullying but also share with other classrooms. I would like my students to research and create an anti- bullying campaign to help raise awareness of bullying on our campus. Our classroom has 3 very old computers that make it a nightmare to research. They take about 10 minutes to load up and another 5 to get the web browser going when they work at all. The Kindle would not only allow my students to have access to the Internet more readily but they would also be able to look for apps and other free materials to further enhance their understanding of bullying and how to prevent it.

These materials will definitely help students develop the skills to deal with bullying.

I already teach character development so these items will help enrich my students' life skills and guide them towards a brighter future. Please help us launch our campaign. My hope is that they will create posters and write essays with their new found knowledge.
