Former first lady, Abigail Adams said, "I've always felt that a person's intelligence is directly reflected by the number of conflicting points of view he can entertain simultaneously on the same topic." Unfortunately, traditional social studies and history texts only present one point of view.
Our school is located in North Carolina and is one of moderate poverty.
The children come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. The students in my class are an inquisitive bunch of gifted fifth graders. I love going to work every day, because I learn as much as they do!
My Project
My students are critical thinkers, who long to learn more about the world around them. These books represent many previously unheard voices in American history including slaves, Native Americans, laborers, and women just to name a few. As we read the books we will complete a variety of activities including, but not limited to, comparing and contrasting conflicting view points in history, examining the writer's voice and evaluating its effectiveness, and utilizing the text to draw conclusions and make inferences about various people and events throughout America's history.
In addition to the learning the students will do in literacy and social studies, they will also learn about themselves, what they value, why it matters, and what a difference one person really can make in the world. Isn't it our responsibility to educate the whole child?
Our prosperity as a nation is dependent on today's youth.
I want to educate children who aren't afraid to ask the hard questions or take responsible risks. I appreciate your support in my pursuit.
