Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As budgets cuts to NYC public schools continue, it is increasingly difficult to purchase the materials needed for students to engage with texts. For example, my students are not able to write in their books. I would love for students to be able to annotate as they read to encourage active reading. As we need to preserve the texts, I am planning on creating custom printed sticky notes for students to annotate their thoughts and practice active reading. Additionally, I would love for students to engage in a creative project called Black Out Poetry, which will encourage them to deeply interact with the language of the text and express their creative side.
We are starting a unit which prompts students to explore the power of fear versus the power of hope as they read Night by Elie Wiesel.
These post-its and sticky notes will help support students in this powerful and timely memoir about the power of despair, hope, and storytelling.
