Wow! My students amaze me every day. They are a group 9th-12th graders whose unique and diverse learning has helped me to grow as a teacher. They are eager to learn and have a drive and compassion to help others. As a healthcare program instructor, I want to provide my students with the necessary tools and opportunities they will need to be a successful healthcare worker.
Our pathway is Allied Health & Medicine.
The pathway consists of three-course: Introduction to Healthcare Science, Essentials of Healthcare and Allied Health & Medicine. Introduction to healthcare science provides a foundation of healthcare which includes lab safety, career exploration, information technology, and CPR certification. Essentials of Healthcare provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate skills through “skills check-offs” and make real-life connections between the skills and/or procedures and the pathology, etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the diseases. Students learn the theory and accuracy of taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure), utilizing proper techniques for ambulation and measuring height, weight, and body mass index to name a few. The Allied Health & Medicine course allows students to engage in a more in-depth approach to allied health careers.
My Project
Students will read and annotate the book A Raisin in the Sun. Annotation is a skill that many of our students will be required to complete during their ELA courses in high school and college. The annotation will help to enhance the student's understanding and recall to the text. The teacher edition of A Raisin in the Sun will help me incorporate research based, writing and thinking activities.
Students will choose a character in A Raisin in the Sun and complete a character analysis using the elements of STEAL (what the character Say, what the character Think, their Effects on others, their Actions, and their Looks.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
