This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school is in a culturally diverse, high-poverty area in Durham, NC. We are a Title I school and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.

Many of our students do not have access to the supplies and safe environment that students do elsewhere.

We are working to ensure that the media center is a place for students to know that they are safe and welcome. Our mission is to act as a community gathering space for students and staff to support their multiple literacy goals.

My Project

Students will not develop a lifelong love of reading unless they have access to the books and materials that they truly want to read. The checkout statistics in my library show that our students LOVE manga and anime! These books can be especially difficult to order for the Media Center, because they often are only available in paperback which means they don't last very long. Replenishing our collection of manga and anime will spark invigorated interest in book checkout. I always tell my students that choosing a book they are interested in and will finish/enjoy is much more important to me than choosing a book that has a challenging reading level and important content, but never gets read because the student doesn't find the book interesting.

My students love to disappear into a manga or anime world, read more about their favorite characters and series, and discover new series to begin reading!

These books are highly immersive, tons of fun to read, and best of all, they develop the same literacy and language skills as a traditional novel.
