Animated Character Challenge: Designers Take Your Mark!

Help me give my students t-shirt printing materials (t-shirts, printer, and iron-on transfers) as a real-world application of STEAM.

My Project

My students are 4th-6th grade students who love hands-on, active, and engaging challenges that are connected to their experiences and interests. My students love to discuss, draw, and tell me all about anime shows and characters. Last school year we were studying the coordinate plane and students were super excited to use what they learned in math about the coordinate plane to plot an anime character on a bulletin board sized coordinate plane for the entire school community to see.

I realized that connecting their love for anime to their math and science instruction was key to keeping them interested and engaged in learning.

The animation character challenge will allow students to work individually or in teams to develop their own animated character that represents our school community.

They will learn the science behind heat transfer using the heat transfer paper and a heat press, use software/technology to design an animated character, learn and follow the Engineering design process, and use mathematics and art to create and print the animated character using the inkjet printer onto the t-shirts. The challenge will be for students to develop an animated character that represents our Math and Science Discovery school. In supporting our sense of community and school pride, students and staff will be the judges for this animation challenge and students will wear their t-shirt designs on non-uniform days and during Spirit Weeks.
