This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a year-round, special education school, serving emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds in New York City and throughout NY state. Over ninety-five percent of the student body is eligible for free lunch and more than ninety percent receive public assistance. They have exceptional abilities and with the proper accommodations and modifications, they truly thrive in our school setting. My students are afforded smaller classroom ratios, personalized attention, and a myriad of specially certified providers that assist in their overall development.

My Project

Help me give my students the chance to dissect and compare different animals. My zoology and anatomy students have been asking to do a dissection lab. These supplies will allow them that opportunity. I have ordered pig dissection kits and some digital scales so we can weigh the organs. The students in forensics will also get to participate in this activity and perform their very own necropsies. Our goal is to allow students the hands on activity that they are interested in so that learning the structure and function of the mammalian body is not so difficult. There are so many vocabulary words that are much easier for students to comprehend when they can see, touch, and connect the words to the actual organ in front of them.
