My Students
My students are K.I.D.S. They are knowledgeable, inquisitive, determined, and successful. The school they attend serves a low-income area. For many students, the school sometimes is the most consistent part of their day. Unfortunately that hasn’t been very consistent. I have great pride in my students. My school is located in a rural area. This year our district has consolidated schools. We have students from four communities combining to create new grade bands and schools.
We are the hidden gems of the school district.
The students in my class are thirsty for knowledge. They come to school ready to learn. Fifty-six percent of the students in the class began our adventure into second grade far below grade level. This hasn’t stopped them from wanting to learn. In fact, it has fueled them. They have big goals, ideas, and hearts.
My Project
Our class will be creating interactive animal habitat dioramas. The creation of the the the dioramas will take place in the student's art class. The students will model their dioramas with research that is gathered in the class and library. They will then use their Chromebooks and Makey Makey to code the dioramas to be interactive. Students will use the Yalulu 6 Pack Mixed Landscape Building and Woodland Scenics Realistic Water to create the foundation of their dioramas. The various colors of cardstorck and adhesive vinyl will be used to create the habitat. The brads and foil tape will create conductive points that students will connect to the MakeyMakey.
This project is cross-curricular, collaborative activity involving three teachers.
This hands on activity will teach students about how all subjects are connected. My class loves to do art. Sadly, students have told me that adults have told them that art isn't important. This project gives students a practical use of art. It is also a good opportunity for the teachers involved, (Art, Classroom, and Librarian) to model to students the importance of working together.
