My students and I are in LOVE with music! We enjoy everything from singing to playing instruments, dancing, listening to and analyzing songs and learning to read and write music notation. Through music, we explore our past, understand our present and blaze trails toward the bright future!
Our school is located in the heart of the city of Boston.
There is a high concentration of low-income families who strive to provide the absolute BEST opportunities for their children despite the numerous obstacles they face. Some of our young students endure hardships that would make an adult fall to their KNEES, yet we witness their resilience daily. We inspire, encourage, teach and reach young people who overcome while living in single parent homes, foster care systems, and even shelters. Some students have dealt with losing loved ones prematurely to violence; others endure extremely stressful family situations. Not every child’s story is one of grave detriment, but each child has a unique story to tell of how they rise to the challenge of learning in the face of adversity. In addition, we have a large population of autistic and inclusion students with a wide variety of needs.
My students are learning to read and play music on resonator bells. These bells are an excellent way for beginners to make a great sound playing timeless melodies that will inspire some to pursue music for years to come.
Over time, our mallets take a bit of a beating with the natural wear and tear that comes with over 300 students using them each week.
In my seven years of teaching, I have had to use the same 20 mallets with each class week in and week out. Some are now beginning to break and bend.
It would be awesome to have a good supply of mallets without having to switch out resonator bells for handbells due to the fact that there simply are not enough to go around.
We also use microphones to sing on our classroom stage daily. The batteries we must use die VERY quickly. Rather than continue to buy several packs of batteries, we'd love to begin using rechargeable batteries to save money AND the environment!
