My Students

The students in my class are sixth, seventh and eighth graders who attend a public middle school in a large, urban school district. The students come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and the majority of the students are from low income households.

The students have all been identified as having special learning needs such as auditory processing deficits and attention deficits, which can make it difficult for them to find success in a traditional classroom setting.

In other ways, they are like all students. They are funny, insightful, smart, and interested. They always rise above expectations when given enough time and support.

My Project

Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical about Alexander Hamilton has captivated the nation and made history "cool" again. I'm hoping to capture a bit of that magic by introducing my students to the novel Hamilton and Peggy. This novel tells the story of an unlikely friendship and a budding romance, all set against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War.

My students are not always the most eager of readers, and so I am always looking for a way to grab their interest.

Tying what we do in class to what they see in the media and backwards to what they learn in history is a great way to make literacy relevant.
