I have the privilege of being able to share my love of reading to students in grades 6-8 at the middle school where I work. Previously, I taught the same students at the elementary school that feeds into the middle school where I am now. It has been amazing to watch the students learn and grow throughout the years, and see first hand their transition from elementary to middle school. We are a Title I school, which means that the majority of the students who attend are on free and reduced-price lunch. Many do not have access to books, technology or anything educational outside of school.
To be honest, some of the kids who attend my school have been dealt a difficult hand in life.
No matter the adversity they face on a daily basis, the students still come to school each day with smiles on their faces, a great attitude and ready to learn. They are all truly incredibly smart and wonderful kids who deserve everything good in this world.
My Project
Research has shown that when a child plays chess, it can help enhance cognitive development, and teach certain skills. Playing chess helps to improve and increase a child's memory, problem solving skills, level of concentration, creativity, and IQ. Not only that, but playing chess teaches children invaluable life skills such as: seeing a game through to the end even if you are not winning, playing fairly and by the rules, working collaboratively as a team, and losing gracefully. All of these skills are crucial to not only a child's educational development, but their development in general. These are skills that a child will utilize throughout their entire life.
