Located in a high-need community, our school is a neighborhood elementary school that has just transitioned to a K-8 structure. My first graders are actively engaged in learning and are eager to learn how to read and use this new skill to further their understanding in all subject areas.
First grade is an exciting learning experience for both teacher and student. As a rising third year teacher, I am dedicated to providing my students with quality learning experiences and a variety of mediums to help strengthen their skills. However, it is up to the teacher to provide much of the resources and equipment that would create such a varied and rich environment. As a result of state and national testing requirements, our school day overwhelmingly focuses on language arts and math instruction. It is often difficult to teach first graders language arts for three hours and math for an hour and a half without losing their attention. Unfortunately, this is the expectation for my first grade students.
In order to break up the monotony while still reinforcing basic skills taught in first grade, I am requesting a complete library of 17 Bingo games. These Bingo games would reinforce basic language arts skills (alphabet, rhyming, beginning sounds, and picture words), phonics (short vowels, blends and digraphs, long vowels, and word families), three levels of sight words, as well as math (numbers, colors and shapes, addition, subtraction, time, and money). With such a variety of skills and concepts, these activities would be valuable resources year-round!
With your help, students will have the opportunity to enrich their education and develop a natural love and curiosity for learning. As Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
