My students are using them to explore math and science concepts in a more tangible way—building models, testing hypotheses, and deepening their understanding of how abstract ideas connect to real-world applications. For example, during a recent science unit, students used the manipulatives to design and test simple machines. The excitement and problem-solving that filled the room were incredible to see!\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their faces lit up with pure joy and curiosity. They immediately started asking, \"Can we use these today?\" and began brainstorming how they could use them in different subjects. The futon also caused quite a buzz—students love having a cozy, flexible spot to read, collaborate, or reflect. It has quickly become the heart of our classroom!\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, my students will continue to use these materials as we dive into upcoming STEM challenges and inquiry-based projects. The manipulatives and flexible seating will help them collaborate, test ideas, and learn from one another—skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom. Many of our students face food insecurity, and for some, school is the most consistent source of nourishment they receive. This project allowed us to go one step further—not only supporting students during the school day, but also providing something to take home and share with their families.\r\n\r\nThe snack bags helped us meet a basic but critical need, and they did more than fill stomachs—they sent a message of care, dignity, and community. Students who received them felt seen and supported. For many families, the gesture came during a time of stress and was deeply appreciated.\r\n\r\nThis project also sparked conversations about kindness and community within the school. Students were excited to help assemble and distribute the bags, creating a ripple effect of giving and gratitude.\r\n\r\nThank you again for making this possible. With the materials funded through this project, I've been able to provide targeted, engaging resources that help students grow in their reading confidence and ability—from phonemic awareness and decoding to vocabulary and comprehension.\r\n\r\nThese resources have truly transformed our reading block. I've seen students who once hesitated to pick up a book become excited to read. I've watched struggling readers begin to decode words more independently, and I've seen their confidence grow right alongside their skills. One of the most powerful shifts has been hearing students start to refer to themselves as \"readers\"—a small but meaningful change that reflects their growing belief in themselves.\r\n\r\nYour support has allowed me to deliver more effective, joyful instruction that meets students where they are and helps them build the foundation they need for future success—not just in reading, but across every subject.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. Your support has made a bigger impact than you might imagine—and I want to take a moment to share just how meaningful it has been for our classroom community here in Baltimore City.\r\n\r\nAs a Title I school, many of our students face challenges outside the classroom that can affect their ability to stay focused, engaged, and ready to learn during the school day. One of the most basic—but often overlooked—needs is simply having enough to eat. Whether it's a student who missed breakfast, a long gap between meals, or just a tough day that leaves them running on empty, hunger can be a major barrier to learning.\r\n\r\nThanks to your donation, our classroom now has a stash of healthy, accessible snacks that students can count on when they need a little boost. It may seem like a small thing—but it's not. Having snacks on hand has helped my students stay more alert, more focused, and more emotionally regulated throughout the day. It's one less worry for them and one more way I can show them that they are cared for and supported at school.\r\n\r\nThe presence of snacks has also created an environment where students feel safe asking for help with their needs—without fear of embarrassment or judgment. That kind of trust is priceless and goes a long way in building relationships and a strong classroom culture.\r\n\r\nI can't thank you enough for helping to make this possible. Your generosity has brought more than just food into our classroom—it's brought comfort, focus, and a daily reminder to my students that people out there believe in them and want them to succeed.","fullyFundedDate":1713808557227,"projectUrl":"project/no-one-learns-when-hungry/8132172/","projectTitle":"No One Learns When Hungry","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Grandier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5815455_orig.png?crop=900,900,x0,y150&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1562595341551","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jody-grandier"},{"teacherId":9367549,"projectId":9039458,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to our class project for headphones! Sometimes I really feel like a grandmother to many of the students, because they know that when no one else will, Ms. Hope will give them something. I didn't think they would like the healthy snacks, but they do and it's much better for them. I am still so amazed how they love, I mean love the Dum Dum lollipops. I often use them for rewards in contest and also classroom helper treats. For example, students make words out of various topics like \"Merry Christmas, Happy New Years, Black History Month and so on. The first 3 to 5 students who makes the most words within a certain amount of time gets to pick a lollipop out of the Teacher's Treat can. I am always trying to come up with activities to keep students motivated and reward them for their hard work. Sometimes everyone will get something and those are the times I am truly grateful for my donors.
