Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Never is there a dull moment in Mr. Bernhardt's third grade classroom! Laughter and positivity is essential in our classroom. The level of energy I give to my students is unparalleled by the amount of energy and dedication I receive from my students in return.
My students live in an extremely high poverty area in Washington state.
From the start of the year, my class and I worked incredibly hard to develop the welcoming and positive atmosphere that now exists within the four walls of our classroom. It was my goal to create and maintain an environment that each student personally wants to be part of. I am constantly amazed by the chemistry and trust I have been able to develop with this class.
Already well into the school year, the growth each student has made is tremendous, both academically and sociably. The personal growth and respect for themselves, as well as others, is a constant reminder that I chose one of the most rewarding careers.
My Project
A majority of my students have very little or no access to technology at home. The only exposure they have in my class is working on archaic computers or using apps on my phone. This is a detrimental issue when the world is constantly developing and shifting the job market to a technologically based future.
Prior to my third graders graduating high school, they will need to have been presented the proper resources, instruction and time to allow them to develop the necessary skills to be technologically literate.
In the not so far future, to be literate and fluent in a language will not be solely based on one's ability to speak and write. Students must be able to navigate a keyboard and also navigate the copious amounts of programs and code in a tech based world.
It is not only my hope to allow my students access to resources with new iPads to develop their technological literacy, but also expose them to the concept of a waste free classroom. With the copious amounts of educational applications involving science, math, reading, writing, typing and more, students will be able to complete digital assignments, no paper necessary. This is an idea I greatly wish to expose my students to, in hopes that they develop and continue to mold a perspective rooted in conservationism and environmental responsibility.
It would be with a high degree of appreciation and a heart felt thank you if I can make this a reality in my classroom! I thank you for taking the time and patience to read about this project!
