This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Each April is Jazz Appreciation Month and my students LOVE learning about jazz! I would like my students to take it one step beyond just listening to jazz and actually learn how to perform jazz music.
I teach over 230 band students at a Title I school in central Florida.
This means that over 75% of our student population is on free or reduced price lunch due to financial strife.
However, we are a strong community and push through the challenges, and in the end have created a strong music program which receives Superior ratings at performance assessments yearly. My students are driven and extremely talented, and I feel they deserve the best when it comes to the equipment and materials we use in my class.
My Project
I really want to start making jazz performance a bigger part of our curriculum at our school. This foundation can only start once we have enough basic jazz method books to make a class set. Once we have our class set then we can start establishing a jazz curriculum which may eventually lead to our very own jazz band.
Having a better understanding and appreciation for jazz will allow our students to become appreciative of the one true genre of music that was created in the United States.
I am aware that many of our students wish to further their jazz knowledge and playing and I can't wait to hear them perform in this new style.
