My Students

Have you ever felt behind the times-that your technological skills were not good enough? Me too. Imagine a society in which our youth gained the practical knowledge, skills, and experience they needed before leaving high school.

My students attend a failing high school in a major city in Pennsylvania.

They walk through the front door of a dilapidated, century-old building every day looking for hope. They have the same dreams and ambitions as students in high-performing schools: they want to be doctors, lawyers, and businessmen. But they struggle daily with the reality of attending an under-resourced, under-performing school. As a consequence of attending an under-resourced school, textbooks are antiquated and somber, and access to technological resources is slim. Students do not have a computer in every classroom. My students are seeking a deeper interaction with the material in the curriculum, but they need better resources to experience it.

My Project

I teach ninth-grade literature and drama. I am requesting a video camera, memory card, and tripod for my students. Access to these resources will enrich upcoming units on drama and film analysis and expand the range of original projects that students are able to create. With these resources, students will learn how to record video, upload it to a computer, use iMovie to edit the video, and produce trailers, advertisements, and short films. In drama, students will film an original play they are writing. Creating films will also require students to solve problems collaboratively. Mastering the skills necessary to film, edit, and produce movies will enrich students' interaction with literature and drama and increase their skill set for college and their careers.

A video camera, memory card, and tripod will greatly enhance my students' interaction with literature, film, and drama.

Additionally, students will learn multimedia literacy skills that will better prepare them for college and their careers. My students will be touched and inspired by your generosity, and these resources will make a world of difference in their education.
