Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged fifth and sixth graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events including craft night and our student-run multicultural fair.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

A big theme for 6th grade social studies is the study of ancient civilizations including ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. Providing opportunities to experience and reconstruct the past gives my students a better understanding of historical events and life in the past. I want my students to go beyond paper and digital lessons, and provide them with opportunities to engage in hands-on class activities- including a mini-Olympics event.

Through hands-on learning activities like chariot races and creating frescoes using terra-cotta pots, history will come alive for my students.

This past year students spent many hours indoors and I want to bring more of their learning outdoors. Through participation in an ancient Olympic-type events students will have a deeper understanding of the strength and competitive nature of the games between city states as they pertain to the ancient world. Students will also learn about ancient art and have the opportunity to design frescoes, which will engage students in mathematical thinking as well as activate their creativity.

By having resources available to enrich their investigations of the ancient world my students will have a deeper understanding of the past and its contributions to the present.
