This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel- Maya Angelou. I fight everyday to empower my students with the confidence they need to overcome educational barriers.
This year, I am teaching sixth grade social studies in a self-contained setting.
Self-contained classrooms are designed for children with more serious disabilities. According to their Individualized Education Program (IEPs), these students are not able to participate in the general education classroom at this point in time. I have students that have learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, autism and medical conditions.
This year, all students in my school receive free lunch and breakfast. My school is a Title I school which means we have been identified as needing extra assistance and support from the federal government. Most of my students are at-risk of failing New York State exams and come from low-income homes. Despite the day-to-day obstacles they come across, they stay positive and continue to work hard in school. My students aim to please and go above and beyond what is expected of them. My school does a fantastic job in celebrating our differences!
My Project
This year, the Common Core has made literacy the focus in the social studies classroom. A new sixth grade social studies exam was created for NYC schools that assesses a child's ability to analyze primary and secondary sources and use text-based evidence to create an informative/persuasive essay. My students struggle deeply with this task.
I am hoping to create a writer's workshop in my classroom where students work together to develop reading and writing skills. I need supplies like markers, pencils, paper and highlighters to annotate non-fiction texts. Students will use the paper to compose their own essays and use the markers and red pencils to peer edit. We will use "Mankind: The Story of Us" throughout the year as a visual guide as we navigate through ancient civilizations. By the end of the year, I am hoping to develop their writing skills, analytical skills and to deepen their understanding of the development of the ancient world.
My students face a multitude of barriers inside of my classroom.
Availability of classroom supplies and materials should not be the concern of an eleven-year-old. These resources will allow my students to participate in the writing process and to develop reading and writing skills. These skills are so important in all subject-area classrooms but more importantly in life. The resources given to me by Donor's Choose will eliminate some of the obstacles that currently exist for my students.
