Anchoring our Understanding

My students need chart paper and markers so that I can continue to make anchor charts to help them learn and retain new concepts throughout the year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Academic vocabulary is crucial to success in 5th grade, but my English language learners sometimes struggle to retain these challenging words in their second language.

I teach at an elementary school where nearly all of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

More than two-thirds of my students are English language learners, and this is their first year in an all-English classroom. My students are inquisitive and bright, and they love to learn new social studies concepts and to improve their reading and writing.

My Project

As the saying goes, in a good classroom, "the walls can talk." Students thrive in a print-rich environment where everything on the walls is purposeful. This project will help me continue to create anchor charts, which are posters that the teacher makes during a lesson and then moves to the walls where they "anchor" students' understanding throughout the year. These blank sheets of chart paper will be turned into colorful, eye-catching reminders of every major concept we learn this year, from finding the main idea of a story to the Revolutionary War to how to form a contraction. My anchor charts include images to remind students of the original lesson, as well as instructional key points and definitions. Anchor charts are especially helpful for English Language Learners, since these charts serve as a constant vocabulary refresher; my students take advantage of these visual resources every day.

My students love to learn, but the transition to an all-English classroom makes 5th grade especially challenging for them.

These anchor charts help foster the development of English academic vocabulary and increase retention of new concepts for all students.
