I teach 2nd grade at a rural Title I school nestled in Southwest Virginia, which was once surrounded by bustling factories. Now, with many of them closed, our families often struggle to find employment and opportunities. Our area has also been overwhelmingly consumed by drugs in the recent years. Currently our school is 61% free and reduced lunch.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning, although the method and environment in which they learn best vary greatly.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. They are truly an inspiration.
My Project
Writing on the board during a lesson is great, until you have to erase it. When my students and I create an anchor chart, we are doing much more than making a cute poster. We are giving these kids an opportunity to look back on the lesson anytime they need to.
We need to anchor students' learning with anchor charts.
These posters provide a place for students to have their memory jogged when they are feeling stuck or unsure. Students love to create new posters daily. These posters cannot be saved year to year because unless the students take part in the creating, the learning doesn't get anchored as easily.
