This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the pleasure of working with 18 inquiring minds that love to explore the world of history through hands on projects. These 18 students are creating a year-long project that connects their culture to the culture of sculptures at a local outdoor museum. Our school is located in an inner-city which is very limited with resources. We are seeking the donations for these ancestor kits so that students can trace their family culture and become aware of their history. These are some comments from the students. "Sadly, these kits are too expensive for us to purchase. We want these kits so that we can find out our origins and where we are really from." "I have no idea where my family is from. I would love to know and share with my family members." We are seeking donations for each of my 18 students to receive a box for them to find out who they are and where they family originated from.

My Project

My class consists of 18 inquiring minds that would like to find out where they came from. These great minds are currently creating a year-long project that connects two sculptures from a local outdoor museum with their real lives. We have visited a local museum, observed two sculptures and studied how they represent the artists' cultures and the stereotypes that come with them. After visiting the museum, we came back to the classroom and spent a few weeks designing and creating our own individual sculptures that represent each scholar's culture. To my surprise, many students did not know their cultural background. After many conversations, one student brought up that they saw a commercial for ancestry.com and the class became alive. They all want to complete a test. Unfortunately, our school is very limited on resources and funding. We are seeking donations to help make this dream a reality for all 18 students. In the words of one of our scholars, "These kits will help us with our learning, education, and our heritage. Most of us don't even know where we come from." Please help this dream com true!
