My Project

The Alaska Native Cultural Charter School's 8th Grade class service learning project is to hold small fundraisers to support our families for field trip fees, family night food, and classroom celebrations. One of our school's values is "Take Care of Others. You cannot live without them," and my 8th graders have taken on the role of role models for the younger ANCCS students.

Our service learning project is to support our community monetarily.

Unfortunately, we don't have the proper tools to hold the fundraisers we would like to do, and this project would give us some of the tools necessary. Traditionally, Alaska Native people support their community, and even though we are in an urban setting, my students remember their values of caring for their community. This is important to my students because Alaska Native/American Indian communities were more collectivistic than individualistic and in reclaiming our identities, our communities are returning to more of a collectivistic model than the Western model of individualism. Last summer, the 8th graders lost one of their peers, and they immediately wanted to hold a movie night fundraiser to help the family with the costs of the burial/memorial service. We have also held a fundraiser to help support the school's first fall festival since COVID shut the world down.

We have plans to hold more fundraisers to build a fund that teachers can use to help cover the cost of field trips, class parties, and class prizes, as well as to help cover the cost of their 8th-grade field trip.
