Anatomy Instruction for All Learning Styles

My students need 12 new lab manuals, a muscle fiber model, and human anatomy flip charts.

My Students

Learning human anatomy and physiology can be challenging for many students. I believe in catering to ALL learning styles (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). Students in my Anatomy class are out of their seats, moving around, and doing hands-on activities.

At my traditional high school, many of our 1000 students come from low-income families.

Our school district has been affected by budget cuts. However, we have passionate teachers who donate much of their time outside of school hours learning new strategies and preparing effective lessons. They truly care about the students and work hard to reach them. We are seeing success in raising students' interest in education by meeting them where they are...socially, emotionally, and academically.

My Project

We have not had new lab manuals in my Anatomy classroom since before I began teaching 8 years ago. These new, full-color manuals with actual photographs and learning activities will greatly enhance the students' learning experience while dissecting fetal pigs. While studying the human muscular system and how individual muscle fibers work, students will be able to visualize these muscle fibers much more clearly with the use of the muscle fiber model. This is one of the more difficult concepts of human anatomy to grasp. Finally, the comprehensive flip charts will be a great tool for lab partners as they review what they have learned about each body system. They will be able to use them throughout the entire course.

Anatomy can be a very difficult course, so many students do not choose to include it as a part of their pathway to graduation.

The addition of these interactive tools will make the class more interesting and, more importantly, will simplify the learning process. My vision is to create an environment in which MANY students successfully complete this course and subsequently graduate with a better understanding of the human body. A working knowledge of the human body is essential for all!
