My Students

Teaching chemistry is a joy and a challenge. At our school we require most students to take chemistry and for many it tends to be their greatest challenge. I have seen the Standard Deviants Chem films and think the kids will benefit from the age appropriate review of the concepts.

My students are wonderful!

Hard working and diligent, yet still struggle with many of the concepts we learn here in Chemistry. My school is in California and Chemistry is basically our only physical science option for graduation. This makes teaching the course so difficult as it can be the difference between graduating or not. I have 4 wonderful colleagues and we work tirelessly to find ways to make the curriculum relevant and accessible to our kids, but it is still very hard for the students because we have some very high level standards set forth by our state.

My Project

The Standard Deviants for Chemistry DVDs the only Chemistry DVDs on the market we would even consider for our course. By simplifying complex subjects and presenting the material with humorous skits, computer graphics and a fun, approachable format, the Standard Deviants DVDs make even the most difficult subjects enjoyable! We would like to use the DVDs to help us reinforce some of the more complex concepts that are very difficult to show the students in the classroom. Things like the relative size of the atom, thermochemistry and stoichiometry. These are just a few of the topics our students struggle with. I believe that our students are very visual learners and in chemistry it's very hard to "show" them some of the concepts we are talking about. This resource will add to our repertoire of materials to help the students absorb the complex concepts required in Chemistry. It's not only hour hope that kids are successful in a challenging course but that develop a love of the sciences.

This donation would benefit a lot of students.

Because this request is for our entire chemistry department you will be able to directly impact over 700 Chemistry students per school year. These resources should remain relevant for some time to come as the concepts in Chemistry do not change from year to year. This donation would be integrated into our current curriculum to provide some much needed differentiation and fun to the Chemistry course. It will be just what some students need.
