I work with an energetic group of young adults with autism who range in age from 14 to 22. This group dances and sings. They crack jokes. They tell stories. They love movies and music. They play sports (basketball is a favorite). They make friends. They love with all their heart. They get mad. They get their feelings hurt. They are a lot like other people their age. The biggest difference is that they don't always know how to process those feelings and express them.
Each student has their own distinct personality and learning style.
They are a bunch of characters who keep me on my toes every day. I wouldn't have it any other way.
My Project
We have two brand new teachers stepping in to fill vacancies in our special education department. These brave souls are currently teaching assistants who are stepping into very bare classrooms. By helping them we can give our students a leg up.
Our students are Autistic and function much better in an organized setting.
They also do much better while engaged. Items such as the literacy organizer and the various hands on items as well as flash cards will help keep them busy and out of trouble. The thermometer will come in very handy as a lot of our students won’t keep a thermometer in their mouth and don’t have the communication skills to let us know when they don’t feel well.
DonorsChoose is the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
