This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I work with preschool students who have disabilities. Many of our students are over-stimulated by the noise, transitions, social/communication demands of the classroom environment. As a result, they can become overwhelmed and emotionally dysregulated and are unable to focus or attend to the learning opportunities presented to them. In response to this, my preschool team has been slowly building a sensory room (as funds are available) to meet the special learning needs of our students. We have already raised enough money for an indoor sensory swing and have installed it. Now we just need the safety mats to go under the swing so it will be safe for student use.

Sensory rooms are specially designed environments that cater to the sensory needs of students, particularly those with autism spectrum disorder and other special educational needs.

Our little ones sometimes become so overstimulated that they engage in self-harm like biting or hitting themselves. The sensory room will provide a daily calming space where they can retreat from sensory overload thus reducing their stress and anxiety which sometimes leads to self harming behavior. It will also provide them with the autonomy to seek out activities or areas that help each of them individually to regulate their own emotions and sensory needs. Another bonus of having a sensory room is that it helps us to meet each of our students’ unique learning styles. Utilization of this room simultaneously provides students with a calm environment as well as autonomy in an alternative learning environment where they can build fine and gross motor, communication, visual, and cognitive skills .
