An L-Screen for a City Baseball Team

My students need a protective L-screen in order to safely engage in batting practice; our current L-screen is 13 years old, and, towards the end of last season, proved itself to be on its last legs.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Miazga's classroom raised $450

My Students

Baseball in inner cities like Baltimore faces an uphill battle. Equipment can be expensive, and baseball diamonds require much maintenance. However, I coach a group of tremendously dedicated scholar-athletes who have been preparing for their season (which doesn't start until March 1) since the beginning of the school year. Every day, they get together and train, whether by leading baseball workouts among themselves or engaging in strength and conditioning with me, their coach. They have done this while maintaining strong grades at a college preparatory high school.

For these young men, baseball provides a healthy outlet for their energies and an alternative to the unfair stereotypes people have about urban areas.

Since I teach English at the same school where I coach, I am lucky enough to have the same students in the classroom that I coach on the baseball field. As such, I am able to witness how participating in athletics helps improve performance in the classroom, and see my younger 9th and 10th-grade players being taught by my 11th and 12th-grade students, who develop leadership and model how to prioritize academics and how to be exemplary student-athletes. These are great kids who inspire me every day.

My Project

An L-Screen is a crucial piece of baseball equipment, and helps teams with batting practice while protecting the pitcher or coach who is pitching. Thirteen years ago, we received a grant with for an L-screen, and have used it nearly every day of practice over the last 13 years; however, last year, the L-screen seemed to be on its last legs, after years of protecting our players. It is our goal to have a new L-screen in time for the season, which starts in March.

This new L-screen will not only allow our players to get more swings before and during the season, it will also contribute to safer, more productive practices.

We will use it every day during practice, as well as take care of it, so that, like the previous L-screen, it lasts over ten years. Indeed,an L-screen is integral to conducting batting practice, which is a vital part of improving as a baseball team.
