My students are mostly African-American and many will be first-generation college students. The district itself is known nationally for its struggles of high dropout rates and truancy, but our school is a successful one that sends students every year to some of the top colleges in the country. I teach 9th and 12th grade English, plus 10th grade Drama, and coach Varsity Baseball. My 12th graders have beaten the international IB English average score the last few years. My 9th graders come from all different backgrounds and I love to see what four years at our school does for them, because often I get the incredible experience of teaching my freshmen again a second time as seniors. I love helping my students find their voice in my classes, helping them effectively communicate their talents for critical reading in a scholarly manner, and seeing their growth over the four years.
