An Island's Energy Needs

Help me give my students kits to deepen their learning of energy by building a solar powered car, wind turbine, and hydro-powered model.

My Students

The students I teach are full of life, ideas, and personality. Each day I am at work, I am sure to leave with stories. They are so full of emotions, energy, and the thirst to learn. Our school serves students from 4 separate projects. Their home life may change frequently, they may not see whole meals every day (except at school), and many have parents that are no longer in the home.

One thing I love about my students is that even though many have less than favorable home lives, they show up each day and they strive to learn.

Our school is full of pride and supporting the learning needs of each other. We have a passion for learning, but more for ensuring our students are safe and happy. Teaching here is more than teaching a topic; it is more about ensuring students feel welcomed, safe, happy, and whole.

My Project

The items included in this project are for a larger unit that I have prepared alongside professors at Yale University. Students will be learning about nonrenewable and renewable energy. After conducting research to learn about those energy needs, students will use the kits provided in this project to

dig deeper into renewable energy by creating models of wind, solar, and water powered devices.

It is important that students learn in an active learning environment. This project will aim to meet that goal by allowing students not to only research energy but to also use their hands to build a representation of the energy resources they are learning about.

Specifically, students will work in stations to build a model of a wind turbine, hydro-power, and a solar panel. Students will then use the knowledge they have gained from the unit to develop a stance on a renewable energy source to replace the nonrenewable energy on an island.
