Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day.
I teach Computer Coding in a Title I school where 85% of my students are English as a New Language Learners.
The children at my school spend more time at school than they do at home. When the school day is over, most of them go to an after school program. Any part of their day that could bring fun and new experiences to them would be welcomed with excitement and enthusiasm. And this is what brought me to DonorsChoose.org!
My Project
An Apple iPad pro is a necessity in my room. I teach computer coding and in order for my students to fully grasp the content I am teaching I need to model it for them first. Since they use iPads in their group work, an Apple iPad Pro would be a perfect way for me to show them the new skills being taught. Along with modeling for them on the SMARTboard, I travel from group to group as the students are working on their coding tasks. I love to lend them the "teacher's" iPad and give them a chance to show their peers how to solve STEAM problems. Additionally, the large screen gives my early childhood and special needs students a better chance at successfully engaging their fine motor skills to tap and swipe items around the frame. The Apple Pencil, lets my students practice important handwriting, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor tasks, that would be missed with a mere finger touch and swipe option. Finally, the Keyboard Folio Case magically transforms the iPad tablet into a functioning computer/keyboard unit, giving my students the chance to learn keyboarding skills that they will incorporate into their STEAM education as they continue to prepare to be college and career ready.
By funding this project, you will be helping to purchase an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Keyboard Folio Case that will put the STEAM learning into the little hands of my big learners and ensure that they understand how to use the most up to date technology.
