This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am an early childhood special education teacher in a Title 1 school. Having an iPad 2 will help deepen my ability to plan, teach, and keep documentation on student's progress, as well as helping my students see and experience the world that they don't have access to in their regular lives.
The students in my classroom are all preschool-aged (3 to 5 years old), and are all in the special education curriculum.
The program serves children diagnosed with:
• Autism
• Down Syndrome
• Intellectual Disabilities (formerly Mental Retardation)
• Developmental Delays. •
But these are all students who are much more than their disability. They are students like any other child, who want to learn and explore, and just need more help than the typically developing child their age.
My Project
All of my students struggle with a significant speech and language deficit, as well as cognitive delays. I am developing a more robust curriculum, and part of that includes reading and listening to stories using evidence-based, dialogic reading practices logic-reading-effective-way-read-preschoolers). Sometimes, I can't bring in all the materials I would like so that the children can experience what has been read. An iPad 2 would give me the capability to show photographs and videos that demonstrate what is being read and learned about in class.
The donation of an iPad 2 would help bridge the learning gap that many of my students experience on a daily basis.
They may not be able to go to the zoo, or see a classical musical concert, but an iPad would help me better demonstrate what those things are, by being able to show, and not just tell, the sights and sounds of what is being taught, and help bring the world closer to them. And that's what I want; I want to bring the world to my students in every way I can.
