Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I can tell my students about the world, or I can use an LCD projector to show it to them. The images, video clips, PowerPoint presentations, and digital games that my students will have access to with an LCD projector in our classroom will enrich their learning in a lasting, powerful way.
This upcoming year, I will have students whose families come from Mexico, India, the Philippines, Korea, and various parts of the United States.
Thirteen of them are English language learners (ten speak Spanish, two Punjabi, and one Korean.) Most of my students come from working class families whose parents have limited educations. A few come from households where one or both of the parents have professional degrees.
According to their first grade teachers, they are hard workers and extremely eager to learn.
My Project
Research shows that children learn better when you show them an idea, a concept, an image than when you tell them about it. An LCD projector will allow me to present images, video clips, and PowerPoint presentations...that will help me enhance language arts vocabulary words and dozens of math, social studies, and science concepts. An LCD projector also will enable us to take virtual field trips to NASA, the National Parks and other locations, that would otherwise not be possible due to distance and lack of funds. Last, an LCD projector will be a tool that students will use to present their own work to classmates, their parents, and the school community. Two years ago when I had access to an LCD projector, my students published a digital science journal showing their learning of fossils content. I hope to be able to give my incoming students the same opportunity.
An LCD projector is a tool for universal access.
It will allow all of my students, even those with limited English, to have a better understanding of the topics we will encounter in our classroom.
