My Project
Each year in winter, my 3rd grade students learn about the Iditarod. You may be asking yourself what is the Iditarod, as many students also do not know. The Iditarod is a dog sled race that takes place each year in Anchorage, Alaska. You can’t compare it to any other competitive event in the world! A race covering 1000 miles of the roughest, most beautiful terrain Mother Nature has to offer.
The Iditerod materials I am requesting will allow me to teach mapping skills, supply and demand, as well as reading standards addressing character traits, central themes, and more.
While teaching the Iditarod I incorporate our Social Emotional Learning Curriculum character traits into lessons. What better place to find perseverance, cooperation and respect than teams working a thousand miles across the frozen Alaska landscape with only a team of dogs. These books will help give students real world examples and perspectives on how these skills present themselves in real world situations.
The students are completely immersed in Iditarod themed activities for the month of February. While studying the Iditarod we host book clubs, read novels, learn about the mushers and their dogs, and even choose a class musher to map their miles and follow throughout the race. In order to teach students about the Iditarod I need rich literature that we can use in guided reading groups and picture books and a TPT gift card to do activities with throughout our unit.
