Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher at Hall-Woodward Elementary School. I teach all core curriculum classes and I try to integrate as many subjects into one lesson that my students can handle. I work in a Title One school in which 97% of the students receive free lunch. Hall-Woodward has a very diverse demographic of students. The demographic makeup is 60% Hispanics, 34% African American and 6% Caucasian. I believe that we have the most diverse school within the system. Due to the economic status of our parents, it is at times impossible to take all of our students on field trips because we cannot afford to pay for each student who needs financial assistance.
In the spring, the fifth grade class will be going on an overnight trip to the Outer Banks. We have tried to provide experiences for our children that they may not ordinarily be accessible to them. This school year, we want to take our students on a three day and two night field trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Many of our students have never left the immediate area and would benefit from the exposure to a new area and what it has to offer. The trip will consist of tours of museums, lighthouses, the N.C. Aquarium and theaters.
We have several students who are unable to go on the trip due to the financial situations of their parents. We would love to take every student, but we do not have the funds to do so. We have had several fundraisers, but the same parents who are unable to pay for the trip have not been able to raise enough funds to cover the trips.
The students are very excited about the trip, and it is our hope that we can find outside funding for the children who will not be able to attend.
The children will be able to visit places that we will study in class such as the Wright Brothers Museum and how the brothers contributed to North Carolina history. Each student will document their experiences in a journal and each night we will meet for a brief discussion on the highlights of the day. Upon our return from the trip, the students will be put into small groups and they will create a 10 slide powerpoint presentation of what they have seen and how they compare to what we have studied.
We are a long way from raising the $18,000 dollars needed for the trip. Between the fundraisers and student contributions, we have only been able to raise $6,000. Several parents intend to let their children to go, but have not sent money. I can only assume that it is difficult for them to get the funds together for the trip. We would be appreciative of any assistance that we may be able to receive from Donors Choice. Sponsoring one or more of the eight children would be a tremendous contribution for our school. I truly believe that this will be a once in a lifetime experience for our students.
