it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is watching my 4th grade students fall in love with reading. I strive to keep an up-to-date classroom library with books of all levels so that all of my bilingual students can continue to find "just right" books throughout the entire school year. Watching their faces light up when they see new books added to our classroom library is a special moment.
This year I have the privilege of teaching 30 students, 9 of which have recently emigrated from Spanish-speaking countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru.
Although I have a large amount of books in English, I only have a fraction of that amount of books available in Spanish. All students deserve equal access to high quality books in their native language. Many studies have shown that when kids have a strong foundation in their native language, they will have an easier time learning to read in their second language (English). Additionally, providing books in students' native languages helps kids feel seen, which is critical for self-esteem and validating identity.
