Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Greetings! I am a second year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title 1 school...that means that my students come from low socio-economic households.
Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day, eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their reading skills.
We have a classroom library the students use to check-out books to read at home and at school. Our library needs to be filled with exciting and engaging fiction and non-fiction text!
Having a class set of book titles featured on the PBS television series The Reading Rainbow will give my students access to time-tested, quality fiction and non-fiction text. These books are memorable and well-written and their stories entice the students to read and reread them.
Also, in our writing workshop, we learn to use real authors as mentors, looking at how authors write exciting stories for readers. The Reading Rainbow titles provide a variety of authors to look at and observe as we write both fiction and non-fiction text.
My experiences and memories of watching Reading Rainbow and enjoying the stories featured have stuck with me throughout my childhood and adulthood. Now, I want to share these same timeless titles with my students throughout my teaching career. I want my students to have the same fond memories of Miss Nelson is Back and make connections with their own school experiences. I want them to know about the book Mummies Made in Egypt, and spark curiosity about history and geography. The book titles you are helping to provide are titles that will instill curiosity, knowledge, and pure reading enjoyment in my 2nd grade students! Thank you!
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
