My students need a class set of Ralph Fletcher's "Writer's Notebook"; together with a variety of memoirs by famous authors as a reference to use during writing periods.
"I don't know what to write about..." If you're a teacher or a parent, then you've probably heard those words a thousand times over Sometimes students use writer's block as an excuse, but quite often their words are genuine. Everyone has a story to tell. They just need help writing it.
The students in my school come from a variety of backgrounds.
There are some that are new to this country, some who have traveled to far-off lands, and some that have no real place to call home. Because of this variety, we are not considered a "Title 1" school, even though we have limited funding and resources. Therefore, we do not have money to buy extra books that could help us align our writing program to the Common Core State Standards.
My Project
Students often believe that only famous authors can tell stories. They think that no one wants to read what they have to say. "A Writer's Notebook" is a child-friendly reference book on how to collect ideas and then use them in writing. A class set of this book would help my students produce better writing pieces and give them the confidence needed to share their writing with others. This class set, together with the selected author memoirs and other writing handbooks, will be a great asset to our writing program. These books will help my students learn how to express themselves in any genre of writing - whether a factual report, a biographical essay, or a fictional story. With this confidence they will be able handle any writing project assigned to them. Such skills will be valuable throughout their school career and beyond.
While STEM subjects are getting funded, ELA programs are being pushed to one side.
The Common Core State Standards expect students to be able to present themselves in a variety of ways. Learning to express themselves in writing is a life skill that starts at a very early age. With your help and support, I can guide those students to become proficient readers, eloquent speakers, and intelligent writers.
