Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. While some students are well off, this is not the case for all of them. Many of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch programs. This makes for an interesting dynamic in the classroom.
Our school sits in the heart of our little community in Phoenix.
This school is a close-knit community with long-standing traditions. We are a school full of pride. We work together to build a wonderful atmosphere which binds everyone.
My Project
In our society, we navigate a world of hateful and damaging language. As adults, we know how to research what we hear and make our decisions based on our education, historical events, and common sense. As adults, we know there are genocides threatening specific groups of people.
Sadly, not all students are aware of genocides around the world.
It is because of this gap in knowledge that I request such important materials. The reason these materials are so expensive is because these are textbooks -- heavily researched by scholars who have made the topic of "genocide" their life's mission.
It is my goal to hold every student accountable for learning:
1. What is genocide?
2. Why is researching genocide important?
3. How can genocides be prevented?
Students will use these textbooks in groups and individually to read, discuss, and research genocide. The end product will be a research piece presented to the classroom. It's my hope that students will learn from these resources as well as from their peers.
While I currently teach Elie Wiesel's "Night", I wish to dig beyond the surface with my students about the roots of genocide in a way that allows them to research this deeply important subject.
My personal goal is to create a space where empathetic learning becomes a desired habit in the lives of my students.
