My Students
My fifth-grade class is comprised of 60 hard-working students, many of whom come from single parent, high poverty households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Our school serves students in grades K-8 and leveled academics, great teachers, and a positive learning environment. We are a school in ongoing academic growth in our state and one of our goals is to prepare our students for success in high school through project-based learning.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, exposure for these students has been limited due to their environment and family situations.
I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences through projects.
The desire to get students excited to explore the world of Science and to learn about the world around them and this can be done with projects. My students need to expand their capacity for critical thinking because their environment does not enable them to do it. I want them to take pride in their efforts and be willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
My Project
The students will create the ecosystem, learn how to work collaboratively and observe how one aquatic creature interacts with another in its own habitat. This experience will help with their understanding of ecosystems outside of areas they are used to. Students love nature so this project will help.
This project is so important because the students I serve do not have opportunities to see natural environments.
The will see fish and snails and watch them eat. This will also provide them with a real-world connection which will enhance their knowledge for the 5th grade End of Grade state test.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
