Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my classroom are full of wonder for learning, but they don't have a place to write and share their ideas with their peers.

My students are an especially diverse group, hailing from all over the world.

They bring with them a wealth of experiences, ranging from time in refugee camps, arrival to a brand-new country, the ability to converse fluently in a home language, and a variety of cultures to share in the classroom. Many of them have never been in a classroom before, and the Sheltered English Immersion Multilingual classroom is their first experience in American public schools. Most are beginning to learn to speak the English language because of their recent arrival to this country with their families. All of them are willing and are very excited to learn.

My Project

I am asking for a magnetic whiteboard teaching easel and 2 pockets charts to help my students learn. The teaching easel is useful for a variety of subjects and hands-on experiences. In math, magnetic numbers and symbols can be used to practice equations or learn numbers, and students can use the whiteboard to share their ideas for solutions. In phonics, students can use the board to make words with magnetic letters, practice handwriting skills, develop an understanding for rhymes, phonemic awareness, consonant digraphs and more. In reading, the board can be used as a Big Book or chart stand, allowing students to highlight words they know or come up and read part of a story aloud to their classmates. As a listening center, the CD player and headphones can be stored in the storage area below. The pocket charts will help students manipulate cards to learn initial, medial and final sounds in words, as well as how to blend and separate words.

This project is important to my students now and in the future because it will provide them with the materials they need to not only learn all of the kindergarten curriculum, but also an entirely new language.

These students are so eager to learn what they can, and these materials will go a long way towards giving them what they deserve. They will have many opportunities to practice reading and writing English, a space to feel comfortable sharing their ideas, and most of all, a strong foundation for the future.
