This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Eager, urban middle school STEM students. I teach in a very diverse school with students who are very passionate about STEM education. The students in my STEM classes are creative and hard working. Most of the students in my classes will be first generation college students and many plan to pursue careers in STEM fields, many of who aspire to be engineers. STEM resources are essential to enhancing these students’ curiosity and creativity. Providing hands-on classroom experiences gives my students the skills needed to be the best in their classes moving forward to high school, college, and beyond.
My Project
Acquiring the earthquake shake table set will allow my students an opportunity to be engineers and design, build, and test an earthquake proof structure. This is an interdisciplinary lesson that allows students the ability to think creatively, while improving communication skills as they work collaboratively to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to an engineering design challenge. Students are then able to conduct a high level controlled experiment and gather real world data. This is an essential lesson where students have the ability to apply skills taught in math, science, and language arts as they work as scientists and engineers.
