Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are unique and lively. I teach reading intervention to 60 students who are far below their grade level and peers. In my ninth-grade class, I have readers who are on a kindergarten to 6th grade reading levels. More than 50% of my students are ELD (English is their second language) or have an IEP (Learning Support). Some have emotional issues due to trauma early in their lives. All the students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch due to their socioeconomic background. Some do not have their basic needs met like heat and their last meal was what they ate in lunch here at school. They complain about being hungry and cannot focus. My classroom is a busy place full of energetic teenagers and regardless of their setbacks, they come to school ready to learn every day. They work hard to achieve their dreams.
My students need our classroom to be a safe place where they can come and learn to their best ability.
We have some catching up to do! I know that all my students will grow in the time they are with me, but we could be more successful with your help.
My Project
Students who struggle reading can get very intimidated when asked to read a book independently. The earbuds and headphones will allow them to follow along with an audiobook and will grow their confidence as a reader. My students are becoming frustrated with the fuzziness of our current equipment. Their voice cannot be heard to properly log in and they are feeling defeated even before they began the task of reading- which for them is difficult. The wobble stools will give them the ability to move as they read, and maintain their focus and comprehension.
The snacks will allow them to focus on their learning and not on their stomachs growling and the organizational materials will make our classroom run smoothly.
