As a teacher in a low-income school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue a love for reading.
As research-based best practices suggest, following along to stories read-aloud greatly improves students' reading as it models fluency, accuracy, and expression at a steady rate. These components are crucial to engaging students in the adventures of texts. A listening center will develop their reading level, push them to grade level texts, and set them on a path for future success as their love for reading is enhanced. You will also give them the freedom of concentrating solely on their work and not become distracted by the noise from their neighbor. Their favorite book could be something heard from the Listening Center you helped provide.
