My Students
My English as a New Language (ENL) classes consists of 9th - 12th grade students who speak English as a new language. This year, my classes are very diverse with students from China, Korea, Dominican Republics, El Salvador, Mexico, and Egypt.
Most of my students in these classes have just arrived to the United States.
They have no idea how life is going to play out in NYC. Despite their limited English proficiency, they are always enthusiastic to come to class to learn.
My Project
As a teacher of English Language Learners (ELLs), I constantly utilize computer technology to create the most interactive lessons that clearly deliver instructions, activities, and tasks. However, many desktop computers in our classrooms are unbelievably slow, and it usually takes away some of my class time to get things started. Sometimes, the desktop is incompatible with the slideshows or online programs that I create for my students. In one of my classrooms, there is a broken laptop attached to a projector on a cart. Without a laptop, my lesson cannot even involve any technology. I have been using a chalkboard and post-it posters to teach.
With a functioning laptop, my students can participate in interactive technology-based lessons.
For instance, when we have different learning stations during the lesson, one station will feature a listening task. The laptop will play the audio clip at that station while students will answer questions and collect information for future writing tasks. In addition, many of my lessons require researching different types of resources, including texts and multimedia ones. The laptop will also serve as a research station within the classroom. It will be brought to different classrooms, so all my ELLs will have access to the learning materials and online tools.
Furthermore, some of my immigrant students do not have computers at home. They find it challenging to create the slideshows or other documents needed for classes on their phones. If I have this laptop in my office outside class time, students can access the Internet to do research, type their papers and create slideshows for presentations.
