Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning is multi-sensory. Students have to see, hear, and talk about what they are learning. With twenty-four students in a classroom, seeing is sometimes a challenge. A document camera levels the field. It allows students everywhere in the classroom to see the material being presented.
I teach a very diverse group of students.
Culturally, they have roots in Mexico, Central and South America, India, the Philippines, Korea, Egypt, and various parts of the United States. Eleven of my twenty-four students are English language learners. Many of my students come from working class families who have limited resources to invest in their educations. Despite these challenges, my students' parents are involved in their children's educations and my students work hard and are extremely eager to learn.
My Project
Research shows that children learn better when you show them an idea, a concept, an image, than when you just tell them about it. A document reader will allow me to present images, literature, and objects to the whole class. It will allow me to model the processes for writing letters, solving math word problems, and taking notes in a way that everyone in the classroom can see and follow. Last, it will allow me to guide students to use the document camera to present their own work. I will be able to teach them how to stand and speak, and how to manipulate the camera to best present their work. A document camera is an invaluable tool for learning, and your generosity can insure we have one to use daily!
My students are fortunate in that my school has a few document cameras.
But we have to share them with other classrooms, and there are times when a document camera would make learning easier and more engaging but one is not available. Please help us acquire a document camera that will be available to us whenever we need it!
