An Author and a Hero

My students need a visit from author Mitali Perkins, and one copy of her book Rickshaw Girl.

My Students

My students would love to meet this author who is near and dear to their hearts.

I teach second grade, general education, in a diverse urban community in New York.

Many of my students are English language learners. Some are recent arrivals to the United States. I have a wonderful class who loves to learn, question, and discover.

My Project

I read Rickshaw Girl to my students as part of a Realistic Fiction unit in writing and reading. My students really responded to this book. In particular, my students from Bangladesh were thrilled to read a book full of terms and pictures they knew. They were excited to share their knowledge with their classmates. I would love to surprise my students with a visit from the author of this book! Mitali Perkins, like many of my kids, immigrated to the U.S. from Calcutta when she was young. She has also lived in Bangladesh, where so many of my students are from. The fact that she grew up to be a writer after immigrating as a child is an inspiration. I want my students to know that dreams come true!

All my students will love meeting Mitali Perkins.

I think this visit will be especially poignant for my many Bangladeshi students, who will relish this rare opportunity to meet an author who has a similar background.
