The school year is about to begin here in California! This will be my second year teaching at a charter school after teaching for four years at a public school in Mississippi. I am thrilled to be able to teach second grade again this year, and I'm continuing to discover ways to create a better classroom environment for my students.
I am determined to completely reorganize my classroom this year to allow my students to move freely in learning centers and spend less time sitting at their desks. I have an extremely narrow classroom that seems to offer only one solution - desks in rows. My students need to move around and learn in a variety of ways. A whole group learning area is essential in a classroom. Replacing my teacher's desk with a large carpet at the front of the room is my first step to rearranging my entire classroom to better suit the needs of my students.
The addition of a large carpet for whole group instruction will give my students an alternative to learning at their desks. They will be able to sit in an area that is a calming color and free of distractions. We will use the carpet for everything from shared reading to math exploration! My students will be able to pass magnets and sprouting seeds to each other during science lessons and see the details of the pictures during a read aloud!
