"Mistakes are proof that you are trying," is a quote that I impart to my students in the hopes they internalize that learning mastery takes consistent practice. It's a process that is not about right answers but asking inquiring questions to gain insights and raise awareness around how we learn and ways we learn best.
As a teacher of students with special needs, I serve students whose learning difficulties may range from recall, focus and attention, and speech.
At times these cognitive difficulties are compounded with the challenges of learning English as a Second Language while having to master subject content.
My classroom is about encouraging my students to overcome self-doubt and build confidence in their ability to learn. My High School is a Title I school located in New York City. We have an extremely diverse population of students from around the world, including Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
My Project
As a social study high school teacher, I currently teach regents diploma-bound Government, Economics, US, and Global History to students with special needs. These subject areas contain highly abstract ideas and concepts that are difficult for my students to grasp. I am constantly researching and modifying lessons to meet the various needs of my students. For instance, interactive learning games are one essential way for my special needs students to access content, and having a powerful laptop is a critical need so they can use the software apps that need a lot of computer memory.
An Apple MacBook Air with a powerful memory will make it easier to incorporate multimedia lessons and the faster processing speeds will benefit different student-learning groups.
The MacBook Air which can be shared by different students will also help me better differentiate my lessons. In addition, the faster processor will make booting up lessons faster as I navigate between multiple classroom locations.
